WAKEFIELD & DISTRICT U3A AGM 16TH NOVEMBER 2017
TREASURERS REPORT.

WE HAVE HAD ANOTHER GOOD YEAR WITH 446 MEMBERS JOINING US. OUR BANK BALANCES AT 31ST AUGUST ARE AS FOLLOWS....NO 1 A/C £11,720.63....NO 2 A/C EVENTS £358.35....CCLA INVESTMENT A/C £4998.23. EVENTS TRANSFERRED £400.00 OF SURPLUS MONEY OVER TO NO 1A/C. WE RECEIVED £875.27 IN GIFT AID. WE THANK OUR MEMBERS FOR THIS. BECAUSE OF OUR FAVOURABLE FINANCIAL POSITION WE PROPOSE TO REDUCE THE MEMBERSHIP FEE FROM £13.00 TO £10.00 FOR THE NEXT FINANCIAL YEAR STARTING 1ST SEPTEMBER 2018. THE ROOM HIRE FEE WILL REMAIN AT £11.00. IN 2015/2016 WE SHOWED A PROFIT OF £3849.75 AND IN 2016/2017 £3690.63. THE AMENDED MEMBERSHIP WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR INCOME OF APPROX £1,300. WE HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE THIS YEAR WITH VERY LITTLE INCREASE IN OUR RENTS. CAN WE PUT THE PROPOSED REDUCTION TO MEMBERSHIP FEES TO THE VOTE. IN MY REPORT LAST YEAR I ASKED FOR APPROVAL TO MORE OUR AGM TO MARCH. HOWEVER THIS WAS NOT POSSIBLE BECAUSE THE ACCOUNTS WOULD RELATE TO THE SAME FINANCIAL YEAR. . AT LAST YEARS AGM WE TALKED ABOUT INSTALLING THE BEACON SYSTEM FOR OUR MEMBERSHIP LIST AND ACCOUNTS. MANY U3AS IN THE YORKSHIRE AREA ARE USING BEACON. AFTER MUCH DELIBERATION WE HAVE PUT THIS ON HOLD AS WE FELT THE COMMITTEE DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH TECHICAL KNOWLEDGE OR SUPPORT FROM THE BEACON TEAM. WE WILL LOOK AT THIS AGAIN IN THE FUTURE WHEN MORE SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE TO IMPLIMENT THE SYSTEM. WE FEEL WE MANAGE VERY WELL WITH THE SYSTEM WE HAVE IN PLACE. SO FAR 350 MEMBERS HAVE JOINED FOR 2017/2018 AND WE HOPE THERE WILL BE MORE TO COME IN THE NEW YEAR. LET US LOOK FORWARD TO THE FUTURE.

Chairman’s Report

At the national AGM in August this year, the U3A national chairman said that there would be changes in how the U3A nationally will be run. A working party comprising three people has been set up, to go through a year-long consultation with members. At the conclusion of this exercise, an extraordinary general meeting will be called in the spring. We await the outcome of this. The chairman also announced that there are over 400,000 members in the UK. We had 446 members in our U3A in the 2016-17 academic year, in forty different groups. There were over thirty tutors, some running more than one group. To all the tutors I would like to give a very big thank you for all their hard work and dedication to our wonderful organisation. At this point I would like to appeal to any member who feels they would be able to become a group leader, if they have any subject or interest that they would be prepared to share with like-minded people. This could lead to the formation of a new group. One group, which is inclusive of all our members, is the coffee morning. For anyone not aware of the format we have a speaker on alternative months, with games and chat in the intervening month. We have had some excellent speakers in the last twelve months and I would like to thank Mags Hilton for organising such a varied choice of speakers. On the downside we have lost the NHS input we used to enjoy. The screening service we had every other month has unfortunately been stopped on financial grounds. Dave, the young man who came to check our blood pressure and perform other tests, called in to the coffee morning a few months ago to tell us that his department was being wound up and he and his colleagues had lost their jobs. Whilst he had been coming, Dave had several times picked up medical concerns, for which he had advised the member to see their GP. I cannot overstate how valuable this service was, particularly in light of the age group of our members and we very much regret its loss. The events committee arranged an outing to Beamish, the open air museum in County Durham, which fell on one of the better days in July. For anyone who has never been it makes a good day out, taking us back to our childhood and before. There are shops, houses, cottages and many other buildings on a vast site to visualise what life would have been like in an age long since passed. Vintage tram and bus rides were available to take us round, from the entrance up to the town main street and taking in the farm, the mine, the school and chapel. Our next event is a cheese and wine party at the community centre, Cluntergate, Horbury the week after next on Saturday 25 November. This is a free event, arranged by the committee, but you need to have a ticket. This is to enable us to cater and also control numbers due to fire restrictions. Shirley Wigglesworth and I have full details and tickets. Entertainment is being provided by our own U3A wind band and recorder group. I would like to thank all the members of the committee for their hard work over the last year. Also thank you to Don Charlesworth and Jackie Sanderson for their time and contribution whilst serving on the committee. We are only a small group and could do with some new members to share the work. We also need to prepare for filling positions which will become vacant at next year’s AGM, when some officers have to step down, having served for three years. The U3A is a charity and all our committee and group leaders give their time free for the love of the organisation and the pleasure of seeing our members enjoy making new friends and keeping our minds active. May this long continue. Next year, Wakefield & District U3A celebrates 35 years so watch this space.
